What is Polygon (MATIC)?

Polygon is a blockchain platform designed to help scale the Ethereum network by lowering the cost of transactions while improving speed. It does this through a growing suite of software products. This includes the EVM-compatible sidechain called Polygon PoS, which uses Proof-of-Stake (PoS) and MATIC as the native token of the network. Polygon is also developing several layer-2 solutions for Ethereum based on Optimistic rollups and zero-knowledge proofs.

How does Polygon work?

Polygon is a global platform for decentralized applications, allowing users from all over the world to write and run software that is resistant to censorship, downtime and fraud. It does this through generalized smart contracts. A generalized smart contract is a computer program that is stored and runs on a decentralized trustless network. On Polygon, all transactions and all smart contract actions require a fee to be paid. This fee is called Gas on Polygon. The more complex an action, the more gas must be paid. Gas fees are paid in MATIC.
